French Bulldog Breed Standard
Origin
Standard-sized Bulldogs in England were used to develop miniature version. During the mid-19th century the diminutive Bulldog was a popular family pet in the English midlands where lacemaking was a local industry. When English lace makers emigrated to France in search of better pay, they took the miniature Bulldogs with them and eventually crossed them with local breeds. The result was a breed known as the Bouldogue Français or French Bulldog. At first, two ears types were acceptable – the typical Bulldog rose ear and the upright ‘bat’ ear, which prevailed as the correct ear for the Frenchie.
Temperament
The Frenchie is a quiet and well-mannered dog. He is not given to unnecessary barking. However, as with other short-nosed breeds, he may snort or snore.
Activity Level
The Frenchie makes an excellent house pet for the less active owner. His exercise needs are moderate.
Height/Weight
The Frenchie ranges in size from 18-28 lb (8-12.5 kg).
Coat
The coat is moderately fine, short and smooth.
Colour
Acceptable colours are brindle, fawn, cream, white, brindle-and-white, brindle pied, black-masked fawn and any colour except those that constitute a disqualification.
Grooming
Grooming is quick and easy.
